Summer Reading
We can use the summer months to keep students engaged and to build and support literacy skills. We offer 2 programs within our environments for students.Option #1: Summer Skill Building
Students can meet in our virtual environments to discuss daily forum topics and weekly articles, practicing the skills they will need to successfully begin to the new school year.
Every week of the summer, a non-fiction piece of writing is sent to the student. Students read the piece, log-in to the virtual environment and complete activities that emphasize reading and writing practice. Students earn points for their completion of the activities and can use the points to claim rewards in the environment.
In addition, every day a new forum is posted and students are encouraged to write their ideas and opinions. Students can write sentences in their dictionary, using the word of the day to gain points as well.
Option #2: A Novel Summer
Students in grades 7 to 10 are welcome to join us for a summer of reading. Two novels are sent to the student’s door, along with a username and passwords. Students read the novels over the summer logging-in to our environments and participating in activities and discussions that stem from their reading.
A daily forum discussion, daily vocabulary exercises, and journal-writing are all included in the program.
This program is great for ardent or reluctant readers. The online virtual environment allows a student to work at his or her own pace. Students are rewarded with points the more activities they complete.
