Reading Ahead to present workshop at OSCA Conference Nov. '08
Reading Ahead is pleased to announce it has been chosen as a workshop provider at the upcoming OSCA (Ontario School Counsellors Association) in Toronto. Conference attendees will hear how Reading Ahead is leading the way in the development of on-line resources that engage all members of learning communities. Come join us at the conference and see Reading Ahead online resources we have developed to transition students to high school and how these resources can improve literacy skills.

Learning Strategies Turns To Reading Ahead
Dr. Denison High School in Newmarket Ontario has adopted Reading Ahead novel studies for their learning strategies program. Says teacher John McRogers: “The kids are excited and so am I. ”

Grade 9 will never be the same!
Bracebridge High School joined the Reading Ahead program this month using the Ann and Seamus novel study in their grade 9 and 11 College programs. Students and teacher feedback has been very positive.

Transition Program a Success!
After a summer of Reading Ahead, students of York Catholic District School Board are heading to high school having met their classmates and are better prepared. Students participating in the pilot created their own on line personalities and got points for completing literacy activities enabling them to decorate their virtual lockers.

Reading Ahead at Trillium Lakelands Summer Institutes for Teachers, Pinestone Inn, Haliburton ON
Dan de Souza, lead writer of Reading Ahead Resources, spoke to the teachers of Trillium Lakelands District School Board about alternative ways to teach the novel and build basic literacy skills at the board’s annual Summer Institutes for teachers. Asked about the day Dan stated: “We had a very positive day. I think the teachers saw some things they liked and I certainly will take their feedback and apply it to our resources.”

York Catholic District School Board Pilots www.tt9.ca
The York Catholic District School Board has agreed to pilot Reading Ahead’s summer reading and transition program www.tt9.ca. Grade 8 students feeding into the board’s high school will read two novels over the summer, meet in a monitored virtual environment and participate in the lessons designed around the novels.

Reading Ahead at IRA, Toronto ON
Reading Ahead met with several publishers at the International Reading Association Conference in Toronto this month. Educational publishers have been intrigued by the possibility of learning objects directly designed for their texts that are enticing for students and provide assessment and evaluation for the teacher. Text books will never be the same.
