Reading Redesigned

READING AHEAD
HIGH SCHOOL>>>

The school environment was built specifically for students who don't see each other on a regular basis or at all. Students can meet others from all over the country to learn and grow together.

The school also works great in a classroom environment. The resource helps generate discussion that can flow over into the classroom.

What's included in the high school environment:

The Journal

Students can write journal entries whenever they like. During lessons, students are asked to write entries related to specific topics. Teachers can make comments to these entries and students will get them the next time they open their journal.

Example Journal Prompt (from Far North):
Write about a time in your life when you experienced one of the following conflicts: person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. environment. Tell how the conflict was resolved. Write at least 5 sentences for this entry.

The Dictionary

Students can add "The Word of the Day" to their dictionary daily. During the dictionary (or vocabulary) section of each lesson, students are asked to complete activities related to specific words found in the novel. These words are then added to their dictionary, and show the vocabulary each student will build over the course of the program.

The Forum

The forum is divided into two different sections. The Forum of the Day is meant to elicit discussion among participants of the program on a daily basis. The topics vary from high school issues to fun conversation starters. This is meant to get students thinking, discussing and writing. Each lesson also includes a Forum section where students discuss issues that are raised by the novel.

Example (from Far North):
Who do you admire most?

In books, characters are defined or identified by what they do, what they say and what others say about them. Take a moment and think about the person you most admire. Don't tell us their name but tell us the type of things they say or do that makes them so wonderful.

The Yearbook
journal icon

The yearbook is a place students find out about others in the program. Questions are time released and students answer the questions to populate their yearbook page. Students can flip the pages of their yearbook to see other students' avatars and how they answered the questions.

Example question:
If you were sent to a deserted island, what would you bring?

Lockernotes
journal icon

Students can send each other notes about the novels, the resource or about anything they wish. Teachers can also send notes to students to advise them or congratulate them.

Locker Customization
